Title: The Non-Designer's Design Book, Second Edition
Publisher: Peachpit Press
Authors: Robin Williams
Rating: 5/5

Serious design for anyone -- not just beginners!

Don't be fooled by the title -- ?"The Non-Designer's Design Book" is a serious book that can be useful to anyone. In a slim volume, this book distills to the very essence principles that seasoned design professionals use. This is NOT Design for Dummies, it's Design-for-Wannabe-Designers, and it's not kidding.
Writer Robin Williams delivers a powerful design seminar in fun-book disguise. Her tone is light, encouraging, and creative, and her information is killer. I've read many books on this subject, and I learned many things in "The Non-Designer's Design Book" that have never even been approached in other books.
Williams begins with the basics, using examples and redesigns to illustrate design principles that will teach you how to make an effective newsletter, brochure, business card, or advertisement every time. She then moves into more complicated subjects such as typography (no kidding ?-- I've never read anything about typography in any other book) that will serve to further refine your design projects.
This book is not for the casual reader -- it is guaranteed to revolutionize the way you see, think about, and design any print media. Williams has written a clever, incisive lesson on design, while managing to be entertaining and encouraging. This book should undoubtably be a part of your complete designing education!

Concise Coverage of Exam Goals

I give this book 5 stars because it does what it sets out to do -- allow you to pass the Network+ exam. If that's your goal, this is the book for you. If, however, you are looking to ace the exam and gain real-world applicable knowledge, you'll be better off augmenting this material with another book.
For study, I used only this book and the "Network+ Training Guide" by Mike Harwood (not knowing that this book is an abbreviated version of that one -- which is definitely is), along with 6+ years in the IT industry to score an 873 out of 900 on the Network+ exam.
So although most of the material presented in this book was review, I found myself thinking, "oh, yeah -- that was covered in one or both of those books" for 95%+ of the questions that I encountered on the exam.
In short, if you've got some experience in IT and just want a book that'll give you an outline of what's expected of you on the exam, this is it. If you need a little more in-depth information, "Network+ Training Guide" by Mike Harwood is for you.

Just use it

First the good news: Very few books give a total picture of assembler code. Usually they are text books, but this is a real hands on book to learn lot of assembler structures. How does a programs laid out(executible file format), what library functions get statically linked, and how they are resolved, how does relocation works, how does loader loads etc., etc. You would find a long lasting knowledge from this book. IF YOU ARE A SYSTEM AND/OR KERNEL MODE PROGRAMMER, IT IS A MUST. But need to go thru the exercises...
Bad news is that it seems like the examples are not tried out with MS visual studio 6.0. You will find the code generation is different, due to some inline library code (ie, strcmp() and others). It does have other mistakes in the programming, as well as in the text. Stack based code execution at the end of the book does not seem to do its job.
But still it is an excellent book to read and go thru those examples to become fairly fluent with large assembler codes, and their working. WHEN THE INFORMATION BASE IS HUGE, LOOK FOR STRUCTURE, AVOID THE DETAIL UNTIL NEEDED, this is precisely this book follows. Nothing could be worse than ignorance, so go grab one !!!

Making the final steps a bit easier.

Ready to tackle the 640-801 CCNA Exam? Want to do some last minute prepping? Looking for the Sybex Exam Notes? With the release of the CCNA Fast Pass you can now get that final study session and be ready to go.
The book's new name, replacing the Exam Notes series, has the same material you have come to expect from Sybex and Todd Lammle. The book takes the objectives, breaks them down 1 by 1 and gives you the meat the subject.
This is the perfect add-on the CCNA Study and Virtual Lab for the 801 Exam. One thing that I like about this book is that even though it is a "cram" type of reading, there are labs and exercises that you can work on.
The book is broken down in to four chapters or areas and each one covers a great deal material. One thing to keep in mind is that this is not the end-all book; you will need other material in order to pass the exam.
Also included is a cd with a number of practice tests and overall this is an excellent final review book and well worth the investment.
