Two Stars

This book focuses on the lifeless details, and really lifeless exercises. That makes it hard to stay awake. There is not a lot of meat. You could not use it for a reference, too much filler and makes the assumption of no particular expertise by the reader. It leads the reader in the exercises and the accompanying CD to believe that the test is about memorization of fine details that would take years to memorize. I have taken a half dozen certifications, they are not about memorizing details. I do not expect to take the certification exam after plodding through this book. This book is pretty much the way other Microsoft Press books are written, some may be happy with that, but I find they kill my interest.

Title: Inside C#, Second Edition
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Rating: 5/5

A book for everyone :-)

I always assumed that Inside C# was a book for beginners and even though I had a copy with me, I never really did much more than casually browse through it. But recently I had an opportunity of teaching some basic C# to a group of youngsters and I thought I'd use the book as a reference so that I can chart out a schedule for teaching. It was a totally unexpected though pleasant surprise for me when I found that the book had a lot of interesting stuff even for an intermediate-to-advanced level programmer. I wonder how many other books out there show us the IL that is generated and explain what it does in simple and easy-to-understand language.
Now I am using it as my leisure time reading book because it really has a lot of useful information. While I might have stumbled upon these little bits of info on my own, this book does save me a lot of time and energy in the sense it's all written there in nice big print for me to assimilate. I strongly recommend this book for all of you with a hunger for knowledge. It doesn't matter if you have been doing C# for ages, the book will still have something for each of you.

i use a lot

for those who aren't experienced in the in's and out's of page layout and design, this book is a lifesaver. it really gets your creative juices flowing by simply giving you a full range of possible ideas for how you can change up your design. i found it much more useful than the idea book, which didn't really help me with the visual expression part. if you have a concept and you simply want to consider all the possibilities for how you can express it on a page, i recommend getting this book!

Title: Computer Networking : A Top-Down Approach Featuring the Internet (3rd Edition)

The right way to learn networking

After taking two classes in computer networking, one using this book - with a top-down approach, another with the down-up book, I have to say Kurose's method is superior.Kurose takes a well drafted course thorugh the often murky waters of networking, and explains to you how the services you know - the web, e-mail, FTP - work, so that as you progress you will have the ability to understand why the underlying protocols do what they need to do. You understand what is needed to make the Internet work and getting the general perspective first and delving deeper as you go is a great, and sadly unique, way of doing things. An excellent book for those in school or those just interested in learning how networking works.
