Just what the doctored ordered!

Before this book, I would spend hours googling for example code to interact with Active Directory using VBScript or Perl. Now, I just refer to this book. This book is amazing and worth every penny of the purchase price several times over. Just about anything you will ever want to do programmatically with AD is covered. This is the most used book in my library.

Title: Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Andre Lamothe
Rating: 4/5
Customer opinion - 4 stars out of 5
Excellent Book, bad title

This book was great. It teaches anyone who is familiar with C/C++ to program and create your own games. While this book was great, and if not for a few problems, it would have gotten a perfect score. Here is why it is a 4 and not a 5: - There were some typos in the book. - I was able to find one error (though there may be more) in the source code. For all of you who haven't found it, the error can be found on page 174. It has the following source: COLORREF color = RGB(rand()%255,rand()%255,rand()%255)); That is wrong... take off the last ), and you'll be cool. - There was some false advertising in this book. If you expect this tutorial to teach you about 3d, then you should wait until Volume II. This entire book is almost bare of 3d, however, this book is the richest example of teaching 2d game programming in existance. All in all, if you are good with C or C++, interested in programming your own games and want to learn the easiest way to program then in 2d, this book will teach you everything from Win32 to the most advanced aspects such as AI.

Title: Building The Perfect PC
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Robert Bruce Thompson, Barbara Fritchman-Thompson
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
Practical advice for the builder

Many do-it-yourself books move unerringly from start to finish. Real-world DIY projects sometimes go wrong and that's when guidance is most needed. Building the Perfect PC stands apart from the DIY crowd because it also covers what NOT to do and what to do when things go wrong.

The authors explain how to tailor your PC to your specific needs. Their example projects cover a wide variety of specific applications. Each project is illustrated with dozens of sharp color photos showing every detail of the assembly process -- including dealing with the sort of problems that seem to come up when doing something for the first time.

Building the Perfect PC has received numerous favorable reviews. At this writing, the only unfavorable review was from the author of a competing title.
